Harper's know-nothingism. . . . .

KirbyCairo: From Politics to Poetry

For those people who are surprised by Harper's recent attack on the long-form census, you probably haven't been paying attention to his personal past nor to his political tradition. The foundations of modern Toryism are rooted in the British reactions to the Revolution in France.Ever since that time conservatives have been particularly afraid of ideals and ideas.  Fearful Tories and aristocrats saw the roots of the revolution and Jacobinism in the exposure of the People to ideas of thinkers like Voltaire and Rousseau.

Census, homelessness and gated communities

The Progressive Economics Forum

I am posting this on behalf of a colleague from Victoria B.C., Ian Faris, an employee with Statistics Canada for 20 years, and now a research analyst and member of the Canadian Social Data Consortium. The data consortium is organized to “liberate” census and related data at a modest fee for city planners, public health bodies, school boards, health districts, police and community-based agencies in municipalities across the country. The Canadian Council on Social Development has facilitated this process for the past two cycles of the Census, and keeps us connected with one another.

Quote of the day

As We Were Saying

Diana closed her eyes. What a shame that the senses could not be more deliberate. The centres of auditory processing and speech recognition, so adept at screening out the irrelevant and the nonsensical, could do so little to obstruct bullshit. The mind was insufficiently selective. It would be better if stupidity and intelligence were mutually invisible, passing through one another like waves at different frequencies, different spectra. No need for politeness, no need to justify oneself, no more deference to the commonplace. Just solitude.

On false deadlines

Accidental Deliberations

Virtually every story about the census over the last couple of days has included some mention of the fact that the Cons' gutted version is "scheduled to go to the printers" on August 9, with some implication that the date will serve as a cutoff for any possible changes.

The old New Atheist

Terahertz

It turns out that Mark Twain wrote an autobiography of his life but decided that it shouldn’t be published until 100 years after his death (which occurred in 1910). Newsweek has posted an excerpt, and it seems like it’s a well timed release.

To Ride, Shoot Straight and Speak the Truth

Introduction

So, as everyone and their brother's roommate knows, Wikileaks managed to get their hands on another chunk of material that the powers-that-be would rather the rest of us never saw. This time, of course, it was a collection of documents related to the war in Afghanistan. This has raised a number of issues which, oddly, didn't come up when Wikileaks released the CRU emails or the draft of the ACTA treaty.

Preparing for Rising Homelessness

The Progressive Economics Forum

I have an op-ed in today’s Toronto Star.  The piece stems largely from a policy paper I wrote on homelessness earlier this year, and that I blogged about here.

Any day now...

Accidental Deliberations

...this whole census thing is bound to go away on its own, figure the Cons. That is, if one ignores the Calgary Herald:

Laying the groundwork

Accidental Deliberations

I suppose there's enough news value in the fact that a federal leader is actually signalling some openness to an election that I can't blame the Mark for its headline attached to Jack Layton's interview. But the real story looks to me to be Layton's message on the outcome of an election when it happens:

Tories convert Russian-bomber incident into pitch for expensive new fighter jets

The Woodstock Ontario Independent News

Tories convert Russian-bomber incident into pitch for expensive new fighter jets   Geez, the CONS probably paid the Russians to fly a couple of planes this way. This almost looks like another cheap media excercise to garner support for their untendered contracts. It's all about the bullshit....all style, no substance.

After hot start, big chill hits Canadian and U.S. economic recoveries - thestar.com

Ok, let’s try it Jack’s way…

Of Mice and Cats

It seems the Conservative government now concedes Jack Layton was on to something when he suggested we open a line of communication with the Taliban to end the decade-long war in Afghanistan. Of course, you won’t hear the Conservatives telling it that way.

Lawrence Cannon, Canada’s Minister of  Foreign Affairs, quietly announced this week that our government wants to engage the Taliban and others in a “reconciliation process that is inclusive of all Afghans, no matter their ethnicity.”
