Ontario’s Public-Sector Pay Freeze

The Progressive Economics Forum

This summer, the Ontario government has been attempting to implement its proposed public-sector compensation freeze. The provincial Finance Minister has essentially promised that he can convince unions to comply. As recent news reports confirm, organized labour has not voluntarily accepted a pay freeze, especially since the government apparently has enough spare cash to implement multi-billion-dollar corporate tax cuts.

School Days

Evilness

School has started again for me in both senses, school as work as a teacher, and school as student. Work is as it always is, work. Enjoyable and rewarding work for sure but I'm not one of those people who define themselves by their job so it's not everything to me.School is going well. I am half-way through my program so six courses down, six to go. I have two this term. One is on tools of astronomy, so telescopes, sensors and so on. The other is very cool, a research course on computational astrophysics.

Salon's Labour Day review of 'Alien':
What happens when you put the financial well-being of a company ahead of rational self-interest? You end up flat on your back in an operating room with a giant lobster creature on your face and a razor-toothed eel gestating in your belly. Happy Labor Day! sdnxry5z7g

Corporate and Gov't Internet Control

Musings from the Shore

This was originally written for and posted on the Civicus Blog

Short but sweet - Just thought I should post a link to a piece in the Economist . . . as it is of interest to those defending a civil society space . . . as an internet - no longer accessible, no longer free and possibly controlled and monitored by states could be an increasing problem.

It shows a graph of country's requests to remove information . . .

A gun-toting gun registry skeptic recants….

MediaBuzzard.com

I had to chuckle when I read Thomas Walkom’s latest piece  -A gun-toting gun registry skeptic recants-  in the Toronto Star.

Apparently the RCMP’s report on the registry has convinced Walkom that his skepticism’s were in fact wrong. The fact that the unbiased-just-the-facts-report brings nothing new to the table seems to have eluded Walkom.

So what revelations, yawn, have convinced Walkom of his apparent apostasy…

Fix the Labour Market to End the Crisis

The ILO and the IMF are holding an important high level conference in Oslo on the “Challenges of Growth, Employment and Social Cohesion” on September 13.  In advance, they have released an important joint discussion paper.  The summary  - highly reflective of the ILO contribution but not contradicted by the IMF contribution - makes a number of the key points I and others in the labour movement have made about the roots

Making the Liberals Eat their HST Lies

Politics, Re-Spun

Before we explore how the BC Liberals are going to spin their extended lie about not having the HST on their radar before the 2009 election, based on FOI records released Wednesday, let’s first take a look at how the National Post bungled its BC reporting today.

HUH? Ignatieff Says Progressive Conservative Vote Belongs With Him -'Liberal/Tory ... Same Old Story'

Buckdog

“Mr. Harper wants to lead by ideology. There was once a proud tradition of Progressive Conservatism in Canada, but under Mr. Harper the ‘progressive’ has disappeared. Where did they go? I believe they are still out there with nowhere to go. Eventually they will realize that they belong with us, the Liberal Party of Canada."
